It is inserted into the mouth to hold the tongue away from the back of the throat, preventing airway obstruction. The flange at the end of the Guedel airway rests against the lips, preventing it from being inserted too deeply and obstructing the airway further.
2. Oropharyngeal Airway: This is a similar device to the Guedel airway but typically lacks the flange. It is inserted into the mouth and extends from the lips to the back of the throat, again displacing the tongue forward and preventing it from obstructing the airway.
