The Guedel oral airway and the oropharyngeal airway are both types of airway adjuncts used to maintain a patient’s airway open, particularly in unconscious or sedated individuals.
- Guedel Oral Airway: This is a rigid plastic or rubber device with a curved shape resembling a J. It is inserted into the mouth to hold the tongue away from the back of the throat, preventing airway obstruction. The flange at the end of the Guedel airway rests against the lips, preventing it from being inserted too deeply and obstructing the airway further.
- Oropharyngeal Airway: This is a similar device to the Guedel airway but typically lacks the flange. It is inserted into the mouth and extends from the lips to the back of the throat, again displacing the tongue forward and preventing it from obstructing the airway.
Both devices serve similar purposes, but the choice between them may depend on factors such as patient anatomy, preference of the medical provider, or specific clinical situation.
