A Ryles tube, also known as a nasogastric tube, is a flexible tube inserted through the nose and passed down the throat into the stomach. It’s used for various medical purposes, including administering medication, fluids, or nutrients directly into the stomach, removing excess fluids or gases from the stomach, or obtaining gastric samples for diagnostic purposes.

Nasogastric tubes are commonly used in hospitals and other healthcare settings for patients who are unable to eat or drink normally, such as those recovering from surgery, experiencing gastrointestinal issues, or who have difficulty swallowing. They can also be used for gastric decompression in cases of bowel obstruction or to prevent aspiration of gastric contents in patients at risk of vomiting.
